Frequently Asked Questions

For Veterans

Can PSD train your dog to be a service dog?

No. We only train and place our own dogs.

Can a veteran donate a puppy to PSD to be trained for them?

No. PSD works with a few trusted breeders to select puppy recruits with the best chances of graduating and we do not match teams until our dogs are over a year old.

Can a veteran (or anyone else) buy a PSD service dog vest for their dog?

Our vests are not for sale. We train our dogs for years and test them, so we know they are qualified to be service dogs. In many states, it is illegal to pass your pet off as a service dog.

How does a veteran know if they are eligible to apply for a PSD service dog?

See our Eligibility page for detailed information. If your question is not answered on that page, please email your question to info@patriotservicedogs.org

Can a veteran request a specific breed of dog?

No. We match teams based on an applicant’s needs and a dog’s strengths. About 80% of PSD dogs in training are Labrador Retrievers. We do not train any hypoallergenic dogs. All PSD dogs shed.

If a veteran needs a service dog because of an illness or accident that occurred after their service, can they apply?

Absolutely! We welcome all who have served.  As long as you were honorably discharged from any branch of the military, you are welcome to apply.
